Locals caught the perpetrators in the act and handed them over to the police

Police have arrested four people, including the headmaster of a school, for reportedly throwing beef at a temple to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindu worshippers in Domar upazila, Nilphamari.

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday when locals caught the perpetrators in the act and handed them over to police afterwards.

The arrested are Shariful Islam Manik, headmaster of Bamunia Kalitola Govt Primary School, Shafiq Miah, 45, Fuleswar Barman, 43, and Joynal Abedin, 38.

In the statement, the plaintiff of the case, Bhuban Chandra Ray, president of the Boro Rauta Kali Mandir said, the perpetrators wrapped a piece of beef in paper and threw it on to the temple premises.

However, locals caught them in the act and handed him over to the police, said Mostafizar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Domar police station.

He said: “Informed by locals, we made a drive in the area and arrested the accused people. They were sent to jail by the court.”

“There is no space for this kind of hateful act that can hurt religious sentiments and lead to communal violence in this locality. We have ensured legal action against the perpetrators and the whole area has remained peaceful,” the OC added.
