Tripura BSF heightens security for major religious fair near Bangladesh border

Minority Watch, Agartala: Security measures have been significantly heightened along the Indo-Bangladesh border in anticipation of the Poush Sankranti Mela, a major religious gathering held at Tirtha Mukh in Tripura’s Gomati district.

Scheduled for January 13-14, the fair draws thousands of visitors, and its location near the international boundary has prompted the Border Security Force (BSF) to implement rigorous safety protocols.

To ensure a smooth and secure event, DIG Anil Sharma of the BSF Sector Headquarters in Udaipur has directed the strengthening of vigilance and the deployment of additional troops along the border. The primary objective is to prevent any unauthorized border crossings during the two-day festival.

In preparation, the BSF has coordinated with district administrations from Dhalai and Gomati to facilitate seamless operations.

According to BSF officials, significant initiatives have been taken, including the deployment of additional forces along the border to deter infiltration.

Furthermore, joint patrols involving BSF personnel, the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and local police forces are being carried out to create a multi-layered security environment.

The security infrastructure surrounding the fair includes advanced technology for surveillance. Night vision devices, drones, and strategically placed CCTV cameras are actively monitoring vulnerable areas along the border, especially those in close proximity to the festival venue.

The Gomati River and Dumboor reservoir, both located near the site, are receiving particular attention, with increased water patrols deployed to safeguard these key areas.

In an effort to manage the flow of visitors, the BSF has also worked closely with local taxi and boat operators to streamline transportation and ensure smooth movement of attendees.

Random vehicle checks are being conducted to verify the identity of travelers, while mobile checkpoints have been established along the Indo-Bangladesh border road to further strengthen security measures.

These concerted efforts are designed to ensure that the Poush Sankranti Mela takes place peacefully, without compromising security, while enabling attendees to enjoy the religious festivities in a safe environment.
