Bhubaneswar: The World Hindu Federation (WHF), Bangladesh Chapter, on behalf of the Hindu community in the country has requested the Indian Government and the Supreme Court of India to withdraw its order and give permission to conduct the Rath Yatra at Odisha’s Puri.
“In Bangladesh, the famous Rath Jatra is celebrated at Dhamrai in Manikgonj district. But Puri Rath Jatra is the root and main Rath Jatra for the Hindus in the world. But in this year Supreme Court of India declared a rule to stop the rally of Puri Rath Jatra due to Covid-19. All Hindus of Bangladesh are very shocked to hear this unwanted news,” stated Secretary General of WHF, Bangladesh Chapter, Dipan Mitra.
He requested the apex court and the Government of India to rethink and withdraw the order and give permission to conduct the Rath Jatra this year by maintaining social distance.
The Supreme Court of India on Thursday disallowed the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and his siblings in Puri and elsewhere in Odisha. Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath was slated for June 23.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and A.S. Bopanna noted that in the interest of public health and safety of citizens, the Rath Yatra festival cannot be allowed this year. “Article 25 of the Constitution itself confers the right to freely profess and propagate religion subject to health,” said the court.
